Question #2 Letter from Birmingham Jail

November 9th, 2009 by · No Comments · Uncategorized

“So the question is not whether we will be extremists, but what kind of extremists we will be. Will we be extremists for hate or for love?”

1.  I find this quote compelling because it can make a difference in everyone’s lives.  Every day, we choose how we live our lives; the decisions we make shape what we become.  How you treat people throughout your life will generally sum up what kind of “extremist” you are.  I try to live my life as an extremist for love because those living for hate are only hurting people.  I see people every day that, whether they know it or not, treat people so horribly that they become extremists for hate and bring about only negative things.  Every decision you make about treating a person leads you to be an extremist somehow.

This quote interests me because whenever I look at extremists, I think that they are inspirational, bold people when devoted to the right cause.  The thought of myself being an extremist is very intriguing.  This quote sheds a new light on life.  From day to day, this quote can make life a lot more meaningful.  We are all extremists for something.  Many choose to be extremists for themselves.

This quote not only speaks of becoming an extremist, but also points out that whether you are an extremist for love or hate, it is your choice.  Whether you are nice to a certain person, or blow them off as nothing, you choose your path.  I see people every day that choose to speak very poorly about others.  They go on with their attacking words of these perfectly fine people.  As they are in this habit of describing others’ inadequacies, they become extremists for hate.  They talk about others so poorly that this feeling of negativity grows and sticks all over them.  Seen in other people is a desire to love others.  These extremists for love are much more enjoyable than those who advocate hate.  There are people in my life that give off a positive feeling when they are around.  These people advocate love and making others happy over the selfishness that is seen everywhere else.

I desire to be an extremist for love.  If you can be an extremist for love, you will influence the world in a positive way.  The only thing that hate extremists do is bring down the world.  Problems in the world arise because people are selfish.  If people could be selfless, they would be able to understand how much easier life would be.  When you are an extremist for love, you give up many of your personal desires to accommodate for those desires of others.  Any hate that is a goal should be forgotten.  People should open their eyes, not be apathetic, and  learn that love is what people are drawn to.
